Garage Door Opener Replaced in Far Horizons, Tucson

What we found
Two symptoms, and neither is one to leave alone.
Shutting down after a few cycles is the motor thermal protection doing its job. When an aging motor pulls more current than it should, that protection cuts the power before anything overheats, and the opener will not run again until it has cooled off. It is a warning rather than a fault in itself, and what it tells you is that the unit is working far harder than it was built to.
The door opening on its own is the more serious of the two. On an opener old enough to use a fixed code, any remote set to that same code will open it, and that can include a neighbor down the street. A failing wall control or chafed wiring will do it too. Either way you end up with the same thing: a garage standing wide open in the middle of the night.
What we did
We inspected the system and replaced the opener with a new LiftMaster chain drive. A chain drive is a sound choice on a door like this one. It is the most straightforward and hardest wearing of the drive types, and parts for it stay easy to get years down the line.
The phantom opening leaves with the old unit. A current LiftMaster pairs to its remotes using a rolling code that changes every single time the button is pressed, so the code cannot be matched by another remote or captured and replayed.
Before calling it finished we tested the safety sensors, set the travel limits and force settings, paired the remotes and ran the door through its full cycle. The photo eye test is the one that matters most. Those sensors are what stop and reverse a closing door on anything in its path, and they have been required on residential openers since 1993.

A door that opens when it is asked to, and stays shut when it is not.
If your opener is cutting out after a few runs, that is worth looking at before it strands a car. If it is moving on its own, get it seen sooner. An opener that operates with nobody touching it is a security problem before it is a mechanical one.
