A torsion spring almost always fails with one loud crack, often when nobody is near the door. Nothing is broken as such. The door has simply lost the counterweight that made it liftable, so what you are now trying to lift is the full weight of the door.

The opener is attempting work the spring is supposed to do. Force it a few more times and you will be buying an opener as well as a spring.

That gap is the break. It is the one symptom you can confirm from the floor without touching anything, and it means the door should not be operated at all.

Usually a cable that has unwound or a drum that has slipped alongside the spring. Both get checked before anything is replaced, because refitting a spring onto a bad drum wastes the spring.
Wire size, inside diameter, wound length and the weight of the door. A spring fitted from a guess is the single most common reason a door comes back.
On a two-spring door the surviving spring has done exactly the same number of cycles as the one that just failed. Fitting one means paying the call-out twice.
With the opener disconnected a correctly balanced door will stay put when you leave it halfway. If it creeps up or drops, the tension is wrong and we set it again.

We would not. A wound torsion spring holds enough stored energy to break bones, and it has to be wound with the door on the floor and the opener disconnected. This is the repair we are most often called out to after a homeowner has attempted it.
A standard replacement is normally finished in a single visit. If a cable or drum came off when the spring failed, that is usually still the same visit.
On a two-spring door we recommend it, and the reason is arithmetic rather than sales: the second spring has done the same number of cycles as the one that failed, so replacing one means paying the call-out charge twice within a fairly short window.
It might be, but it is at least as likely to be dry rollers, worn bearings or loose hardware. Noise is worth diagnosing early because the cheap fixes stay cheap only while they are caught early.
Yes, and then leave the door down. Pulling the release cord while the door is up removes the only thing holding it, so if you do have to disconnect, do it with the door closed.
