Opener repair · Tucson, AZ

Garage door opener repair in Tucson. Half of what looks like an opener fault is not.

Discount Door Service repairs garage door openers across Tucson, AZ and Oro Valley, Marana, Vail, Sahuarita, Rita Ranch and the Catalina Foothills, on chain-drive, belt-drive, screw-drive and wall-mount units. The first job is working out whether the opener is actually at fault. A door that has gone heavy because of a spring, or that binds because of a roller, presents exactly like a failing motor, and replacing the opener fixes nothing. Where the unit is genuinely the problem we repair gears, logic boards, sensors, remotes and travel settings rather than defaulting to a new one. Family owned since 1999, licensed ROC #322606. Call (520) 579-9084.

What is it actually doing?

Four opener symptoms and what they usually mean

The symptom narrows it down a long way before anyone gets a ladder out. These four cover most of the calls we take.

01

The motor runs but the door does not move

Classic stripped drive gear on a chain or screw drive. The motor is turning, nothing is transmitting it. A gear kit is usually far cheaper than a new opener.

02

It hums or clicks and does nothing

Often a seized capacitor or a jammed carriage, but it is also what a door does when the spring has broken and the opener is being asked to lift the full weight. The door gets checked first.

03

It closes partway then reverses

Usually the safety photo-eyes misaligned, blocked or sun-dazzled, or the close-force setting too low. Rarely the motor itself.

04

The wall button works but the remotes do not

That is a receiver, battery or programming issue, not a mechanical one, and it is often the cheapest visit we do.

How the diagnosis works

Disconnect and lift by hand first

With the opener released, a balanced door should lift smoothly and stay put halfway. If it does not, the fault is the door and no opener will fix it.

Check the safety system

Photo-eye alignment, lens condition and wiring. Arizona sun on a west-facing sensor causes faults that look exactly like a failing board.

Test the drive and the logic

Gear condition, carriage travel, limits, force settings and the board. This is where a genuine opener fault shows itself.

Repair where it is worth repairing

Gear kits, capacitors, boards, sensors and remotes. We will tell you honestly when a unit is old enough that repairing it is throwing money at it.

What to expect

How the visit goes

Door first, opener second. That order saves people money more often than anything else we do.

01

Describe the behavior

Hums, clicks, runs without moving, reverses, works on the wall button only. Each points somewhere different.

02

Door tested before opener

Manual lift and balance test, so we are not selling you a motor to fix a spring.

03

Repair, re-set, test

Parts fitted, travel and force re-set, safety reverse tested, and the door cycled several times.

What changes the price

Repair or replace, and how to tell

Openers are one of the few parts where replacement is sometimes genuinely the better buy. Four things decide it.

Which part failed

A gear kit, a capacitor or a sensor pair are inexpensive. A logic board on an older unit often is not.

Age and parts availability

There comes a point where boards are no longer made. We will tell you when you are there rather than order something that will not arrive.

Drive type

Chain, belt, screw and wall-mount units differ in what fails and what it costs to put right.

Whether the door caused it

An opener that burned out lifting an unbalanced door will do it again unless the door is sorted at the same time.

You get the price before work starts, and an honest answer on whether the unit is worth repairing at all.

Tucson homeowners

The opener is the symptom more often than the cause

An opener is sized to move a counterbalanced door, not to lift one. When a spring weakens or a roller binds, the motor takes up the difference, and it will keep doing so until it fails. That is why we test the door by hand before touching the unit: quite often the opener is a healthy motor that has been quietly overloaded for months.

Garage door opener questions

Not necessarily, and this is the single most common misdiagnosis. Pull the release cord with the door closed and try lifting by hand. If the door is heavy or will not stay put halfway, the fault is the spring, not the motor.

Usually the photo-eyes, either misaligned, dirty or getting direct sun into the lens. Sometimes the close-force or the down limit needs re-setting after work on the door.

Depends entirely on which part failed and whether boards are still available. A gear kit on a sound unit is good value. A board on something two decades old usually is not, and we will say so.

Longer than most people get out of one, provided the door it moves stays balanced. The openers that die early are almost always the ones doing the spring’s job as well as their own.

Usually. Remotes, keypads and receivers are separate from the drive, and reprogramming or replacing a remote is one of the cheapest calls we take.
