An opener is sized to move a counterbalanced door, not to lift one. When a spring weakens or a roller binds, the motor takes up the difference, and it will keep doing so until it fails. Add 110-degree afternoons and direct sun on a west-facing photo-eye, and a healthy unit can look broken. That is why we test the door by hand and check the sensors before touching the opener: quite often it is a healthy motor that has been quietly overloaded for months.
