A Tucson homeowner needed an older sectional garage door replaced. We removed the existing door and hardware and installed a new white steel sectional with traditional raised panels.
What a door replacement actually involves
There is a fair assumption that swapping a garage door means taking the old one off and putting the new one on. A sectional door does not arrive as a door. It arrives as sections, hinges, rollers, brackets, track and a spring system, and it is built in the opening a section at a time, each one squared up and fixed to the one below before the next goes on.
That is where most of the four to six hours goes. The bottom section sets the line for everything above it, so if it is out by a little at the floor it is out by a lot at the top.
Matching the spring system to the new door
This is the part nobody thinks about, and it is the part that decides how long the whole thing lasts.
A garage door is not lifted by its opener. It is counterbalanced by the torsion springs on the shaft above the opening, and those springs have to suit the weight of the door they are carrying. A new steel door does not necessarily weigh what the old one weighed, so the spring system gets adjusted to the new door rather than left as it was found.
When that is wrong the symptoms are not dramatic at first. The door feels heavy by hand, it will not hold its position halfway up, and the opener strains on every single cycle and wears out years before it should have.
Tracks, the existing opener, and the test
The tracks were aligned as the door went up. They have to be plumb and square to the opening or the rollers bind, which shows up as noise and uneven travel long before anything actually breaks.
The existing LiftMaster opener was sound, so it was reconnected rather than replaced. There is no sense in selling somebody a new opener when the one they have is working. It does have to be proven against the new door though, because the door it was set up for is gone. The completed system was run through its cycle and checked for balance, smooth movement and safe operation.
