Garage Door Panel Reinforcement in Rita Ranch, Tucson
A customer called because the top two panels of their garage door were folding inward and making a loud popping noise. During our inspection, we found cracks behind the hinges that were allowing the door to sag when open.
What was actually wrong
The panels were cracked behind the hinges.
A sectional door hangs from its hinges as it rolls up into the ceiling. When the door is open, the upper panels lie flat overhead and the hinges carry their weight. If the steel behind a hinge has cracked, that panel has nothing solid holding it, and it flexes and sags instead of staying straight.
That flex is what the customer was hearing. Each time the door moved, the weakened panels bent inward and snapped back, which is the loud popping noise. Left alone, the movement tends to work the cracks longer.
What a strut does, and what it does not
It is worth being straight about this part.
A reinforcement strut is a stiff steel brace fastened across the width of a panel. It spreads the load along the panel so it can no longer fold at the weak point, and it takes a lot of the flex out of the door.
What it cannot do is make cracked steel whole again. The cracks are still there under the strut. If they keep spreading, the panel itself will eventually need replacing, and we will tell you when that point comes.
What we did
We installed a reinforcement strut across one panel to stiffen it and reduce the flex. The strut helps support the damaged panel and may extend the door’s useful life, though it does not repair the existing cracks.
