Two Broken Torsion Springs Replaced in Riverside Terrace
A homeowner in Riverside Terrace, just north of River Road and La Cañada Drive, called Discount Door Service about a garage door that would open only a few inches before closing again.
What we found
Both torsion springs above the door were broken.
On a two spring system that is not unusual. Both springs go up at the same time and turn the same number of cycles, so once the first one lets go the second is rarely far behind.
It is the springs, not the opener, that carry the weight of the door. With both of them broken the opener was meeting that weight on its own, reading the overload and sending the door straight back down. That was the few inches and back the homeowner kept seeing.
What we did
We measured the old springs before replacing them. Wire diameter, inside diameter, length and wind direction all have to suit the door, and a spring that is close but not exact will never balance it properly.
Both were replaced as a pair and wound to tension with proper winding bars, then the door was balanced by hand until it held its own position halfway up. After that a general service, including lubrication and a check over the hardware.
About an hour and a half on site.
The result
The customer told us the door ran more smoothly than it had in the previous five years.
That comes up more often than you would think. Springs weaken gradually, so a door gets heavier and slower over years without anyone noticing it happening. Getting the counterbalance right again is the part people actually feel.
Riverside Terrace is mostly houses from the 1960s and 1970s, and plenty of them are still running an early set of springs. If your door is starting to feel heavy, or it drops the last stretch instead of settling, that is worth a look before it goes.
