Heavy One-Piece Garage Door Replacement in Catalina, AZ
A customer on Edwin Road in Catalina needed an old, heavy one-piece garage door taken out and replaced.
Why a one-piece door is a different job
A one-piece door, sometimes called a slab or a tilt-up, is exactly what the name says. It is a single rigid panel that swings out and up in one movement instead of folding into sections along a track. They were common on homes of a certain age, and you still come across them on older properties around Catalina and the wider Tucson area.
Two things make one harder to remove than a sectional door. The first is the object itself. It is one large, heavy, awkward panel with nothing to break it down into, so there is no point in the process where it gets lighter or easier to hold. A wood slab that has spent decades in the desert weighs more than people expect.
The second is the spring tension. A one-piece door is counterbalanced by springs at either side of the opening, and that tension is still stored in the hardware while the door is hanging there. It has to come off in a controlled order, with the door held and supported, before anything gets unbolted.
How it came out and what went back
This was a two-person job, and not by preference. The door was clamped and supported before any hardware came off, the spring tension was released in sequence, and the slab was lowered and carried out rather than allowed to drop.
With the opening clear we checked and prepared the framing. That is the step that catches people out. The old jambs have been carrying that slab for decades, and you only find out what condition they are really in once the door is off. The new door needs sound, square framing to fasten to, and some track or hardware modification is normal rather than exceptional.
The new door then went in, and the finished system was balanced, adjusted and run through its cycle until it was operating smoothly and safely.

How long it takes
Around five to eight hours with a two-person crew.
That range is wide for good reason. It depends on the weight of the original door, what condition the framing turns out to be in once it is exposed, and how much track or hardware modification the replacement needs. A one-piece removal is not a quick visit, and anyone quoting it as one has not looked at the door.
